What is Digital Collective Memory (DCM)?
The term “Digital Collective Memory” refers to two things:
1. It is the name of the online platform www.memory-collective.org.
2. It also describes the community emerging on this platform – all people who are registered and active here.
Who operates the platform?
The platform is funded by the Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future (EVZ Foundation) in Berlin and operated by iRights.Lab, an independent think tank for digitalization and society. We collaborate regularly with the Landecker Digital Memory Lab (LDML), NFDI4Memory / ELSA4Memory and the Zachor Foundation, as well as with many others for certain events and activities.
What is the platform about?
Our goal is to bring together people who work with digital formats for remembrance. We explore and discuss new ways of dealing with:
- the history of National Socialism
- the history of occupation
- the Second World War
- persecution and genocide
- other historical topics
Projects can be presented, supported, discussed, or collaboratively developed. Everyone is welcome to contribute expertise, ideas, questions, and perspectives.
Who is the platform for?
DCM is designed as a meeting and exchange space for everyone involved in digital tools for historical-civic education, including:
- professionals and private individuals
- employees of cultural and educational institutions
- researchers, thinkers, practitioners, and creators
- people from both formal and non-formal education sectors
- the digital technology community
- participants from all over the world
Goals of DCM
- Providing a safe and central place for exchange on digital tools in historical-civic education
- Promoting the development and use of digital remembrance formats
- Supporting networking and mutual assistance for projects and ideas
- Generating new insights and discussions – and sharing them with the wider public
How does the platform work?
In order to become a member of DCM, a registration (for free) is needed. Every member creates their own profile and can contact other members via direct messages. Spaces are dedicated areas on specific topics, teams, or interests and follow a shared structure. As a space member, you can actively participate and comment, or simply subscribe to receive updates.
There are many other features of this platform: surveys, file sharing, discussions, organizing tasks in groups... If you are interested in learning more about DCM's features and how they can benefit you or your organization/project, please contact digitalcollective@irights-lab.de.
Why is everything in English?
DCM addresses an international audience, so English is our shared working language. In private (group) messages, you may choose any language you feel comfortable with.
✨ Fun fact: Most of us here are not native English speakers — so don’t worry about grammar or typos. Kindness matters more than perfection.
